Successful first virtual General Assembly

On December 10th, Wikimedia Switzerland held its first ever online Extraordinary General Assembly and it was a successful event. After thorough technical testing prior to the assembly, Wikimedia members from all around Switzerland, the WMCH board and WMCH staff met at 18.00h in the virtual meeting room.

The event was moderated by the president of the board Bagawathram Maheswaran, Executive Director Jenny Ebermann and Cornelius Pietzner. On top the agenda where three main points that needed to be voted on: changes to the WMCH bylaws, protection of the Wikimedia funds and the WMCH budget 2019.

Bagawathram Maheswaran presented the first motion concerning the changes to the WMCH bylaws and a discussion followed. Several members asked questions to clarify certain points and each one was answered by the WMCH board or staff. After a short initial technical set up, the members proceeded to vote on the motion. All votes where successfully registered and the motion was accepted.

The second point on the agenda was the protection of the Wikimedia funds. Cornelius Pietzner presented the measures that needed to be taken to protect the WMCH assets and detailed the reasons and consequences. Again, after a short discussion and a round of questions, the motion was voted on, without any technical or operational issues, and passed by the voting members.

The third and final motion was the vote on the WMCH budget for 2019. Wikimedia CH Executive Director Jenny Ebermann presented the new budget plan in detail and explained some of the main projects the WMCH team is working on, as well as some of the new developments for next year. The budget was then voted on and passed with a large majority, indicating the trust into Wikimedia Switzerland’s direction and strategy.

The Extraordinary General Assembly was scheduled for two hours and right on time, at 20.00h, the session concluded.

The Wikimedia CH team would like to thank all the WMCH members and board members, Bagawathram Maheswaran, Cornelius Pietzner and the technical team for their participation and efforts to make the first virtual EGA a success.

Switzerland and its cultural heritage

The awareness of our society and our belonging is based on a common cultural heritage. We have consciously and unconsciously embraced this heritage since childhood: through our surroundings, traditions, art, buildings, landscapes, food and crafts.

This diversity is a great opportunity and the boundaries between the different areas of cultural heritage are fluid.

Our cultural heritage not only shapes the identity of the individual, but is also an important anchor for our society. It often shapes and surrounds us unnoticed and seems to be present as a matter of course. It is a collective task to recognize, name and communicate the value and significance of cultural heritage for the community today. Society also has a permanent duty to find a way of dealing with cultural heritage that leaves room for evolution for future generations.

Wikimedia Switzerland is an official partner of Cultural Heritage 2018.

Wikidata Enthusiasts meet in Zurich

Call to all Wikidata enthusiasts in Zurich – we would like to meet and discuss ideas. We invite Wikidata editors, (linked) open data hackers, data scientists and data providers to meet up in Zurich.

Are you new to Wikidata, but interested and willing to contribute? You are very welcome to join.

The meetings will be a place where you can ask for new ideas, report, collect ideas and even experiment with code in an informal and friendly atmosphere. If you would like to give a flash presentation or suggest a topic that you would like to discuss with others, you have the opportunity to do so as well.

This project is organised by Cristina Sarasua (University of Zurich, member of Wikimedia Switzerland) with the support of Wikimedia Switzerland and in particular Ilario Valdelli (employee of Wikimedia Switzerland).

More information on current events and contacts can be found at Wikidata Zurich Meetup.

New Wikimedia Events Calendar

Our Wikimedia team introduces a new online calendar where you can find all events, supported by Wikimedia CH or not, in the language of the event.

The calendar is open to everyone and the Swiss Wikimedia community can register their events independently. The agenda is completed with national and international Wikimedia meetings and conferences.

Click here for the Wikimedia Calendar 2018.

If you need help with the editing, please visit the discussion page or contact Wikimedia Switzerland directly at info@wikimedia.ch.

Wikimedia Member Projects 2019

Wikimedia Switzerland invites members to submit their project proposals for the 2019 annual plan. Please note that only projects or programs that meet the following criteria are considered: Projects for GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives and museums), i.e. cultural institutions, learning and education projects as well as projects for the active community (support, connection, training). We pay a particular attention to projects that promote diversity, know-how or communication.

If you have a Wikimedia project that seems well adapted to the organization and that could be part of the 2019 annual plan, please present it to us.

Following submission, this proposal will be reviewed and evaluated by employees and the Board of Management.
Submissions are possible in your native language (German, English, Italian, French).
Wikimedia Switzerland can also accept unplanned projects during the current year if they fit well with our strategy and achieve the desired objectives.

The registration deadline is September 1, 2018.

More information on participation can be found directly at project page 2019.
